Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum Takes a Big Step Towards Going Green!

Released: Friday, July 3, 2009

The Friends of Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum recently donated a 14-passenger Solar-Electric Hybrid Vehicle to Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM). The vehicle will be used to ensure better accessibility to JPPMs trails, outdoor exhibits, guided tours, and archaeology sites. This environmentally-friendly vehicle recharges its own batteries in the sun through solar panels mounted on the roof. The solar cells then convert the direct sunlight into electricity. The vehicle can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour and is carbon-free. The Friends purchased the vehicle with a $21,000 grant from the National Recreational Trails Program, which is administered through the State Highways Authority. On June 19th, during his Capital for the Day visit, Governor Martin OMalley accepted the keys to the vehicle from the Friends of JPPM. The Friends of JPPM are pleased to be able to present this to Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, added Friends President Celeste Furey. The vehicle will allow even more people to experience all that JPPM has to offer while leaving no carbon footprint. Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, a state museum of archaeology and home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, is a program of the Maryland Historical Trust, a division of the Maryland Department of Planning. It is located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River and the St. Leonard Creek in St. Leonard, Calvert County, Maryland. For more information, call 410-586-8501 or visit www.jefpat.org.
