Jefferson Patterson Park & Museums War of 1812 Exhibit Now Open

St. Leonard, May 2, 2011 Imagine foreign troops have invaded your community. Some say that these troops have no business being here, but others are helping them by serving as spies or navigatorswhether because they believe in their cause or because they are afraid, it is difficult to say. What would you do? Fight them in hopes of keeping your farm and family intact? Join them and pray that you have chosen the winning side? Jefferson Patterson Park & Museums new War of 1812 exhibit forces visitors to ask themselves these questions, while learning about a conflict that is so important to Marylands history

April 15, 2011, marked the grand opening of JPPMs new exhibit titled; FARMERS, PATRIOTS and TRAITORS: Southern Maryland and the War of 1812. Located in JPPMs exhibit barn, which also features antique farm equipment and the 12,000 Years on the Chesapeake: an Archaeological Story display; the new exhibit experience begins with a display of two cannons manned by American and British soldiers. Upon entering the doors of the exhibit, visitors are given a detailed overview of the war, along with an account of the events on and around the park.

The exhibit will be open Saturdays from 10 AM -4 PM and Sundays from 12 PM -4 PM, as well as during special events at the park. Along with informative panels, the exhibit features artifacts that help bring the exhibit to life such as an antique musket, as well as a short film providing additional War of 1812 facts.

Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, a state museum of archaeology and home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, is a program of the Maryland Historical Trust, a division of the Maryland Department of Planning.
