Released: Monday, April 18, 2011

2011 Public Archaeology Season: May 10 through July 2

St. Leonard, April 11, 2011 Have you ever thought about becoming an Archaeologist? Here is your opportunity! Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, State Museum of Archaeology, in Calvert County invites you to excavate with museum archaeologists at the site of an 18th-century plantation on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (weather permitting), and to join them in the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory on Tuesdays and Thursdays where time will be spent cleaning the artifacts that have been excavated in order to rediscover what was found. You are welcome to participate as often as youd like, or just stop by to see the latest discoveries! If you are interested in participating, contact Ed Chaney at 410-586-8554 or echaney@mdp.state.md.us to reserve a spot.

This year, participants will return to Smiths St. Leonard, an archaeology site overlooking the Patuxent River. The Smith family residence, a detached kitchen with two fireplaces, a horse stable, and a slave quarter are among the building remains buried there.

Funding for the 2011 Public Archaeology Program is provided by the Marpat Foundation and by an anonymous donation.
